6 Great Civil Rights Movie Projects Shot in Georgia

This afternoon we realized that there have been some terrific movies & television projects shot right here in Georgia which explore many aspects of the civil rights movement, and we’d love to share them with you now!

Bus Boycott (HBO, 2001)

A docudrama about the civil rights bus boycotts of the 1950s. Directed by Clark Johnson for HBO, featuring Jeffrey Wright as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Terrence Howard as Ralph Abernathy.

Remember the Titans (Bruckheimer/Disney, 2000)

Remember the Titans is a 2000 American sports drama film produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Boaz Yakin. The plot was conceived from a screenplay written by Gregory Allen Howard. The film is based on the true story of African American coach Herman Boone portrayed by Denzel Washington, as he tries to introduce a racially divided team at the T. C. Williams High School in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Alexandria, Virginia during the early 1970s. Actor Will Patton portrays Bill Yoast, an assistant coach making a transition to help out Boone. The real life portrayal of athletes Gerry Bertier and Julius Campbell, played by Ryan Hurst and Wood Harris, appear within the harmonized storyline; while Kip Pardue and Kate Bosworth also star in principal roles. – Wikipedia

That’s right everybody, zombies have taken over the cover of this year’s Georgia Film & Television Sourcebook, and they’re on the way to film industry mailboxes any day now! Are you a Producer or studio exec coming into town to scout a project? Ring up the state’s film office to see if they’re in stock… in case you couldn’t tell, these things just keep WALKING off the shelf, mah deah…!!! (did you see both of the things we just did there??) – Congrats to all involved for another great sourcebook… so big it needed a mega spiral 🙂

Pinewood Studios Coming to Atlanta?

In case you missed it, the news of a Pinewood Studios-managed facility in Fayette County, south of Atlanta, was announced this afternoon by the Atlanta Business Chronicle and the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Georgia Set to Keep 30% Tax Incentives with HB1027

Two weeks following a rather embarrassing mea culpa (see previous post), a numbered House Bill has emerged from the Georgia Legislature addressing Georgia’s Motion Picture & Television Industry and it appears that the Legislature is committed to Georgia’s 30% tax credit for another year. As a local activist explained, “People who work in Georgia’s entertainment industry shouldn’t be surprised by an annual review of our tax incentives.”
